One Christmas song I don't quite understand still leaves me thinking, "Counseling may be needed."

Last night our family experienced Christmas Eve together by attending a local church that performed a number of our favorite and most popular Christmas songs. One of the Christmas songs performed was, "Do You Hear what I Hear?" If you're familiar with this song then you know that there is a whole lot of talking going on (the night wind speaks, the lamb speaks to the shepherd boy, etc) - but the one verse that really had me thinking was this verse - "A child a child, shivering in the cold, let us bring Him silver and gold, let us bring Him silver and gold." Now, I don't know about you, but if I had a child shivering in the cold, silver and gold isn't going to warm him up. Not going to cut it. I'm thinking more like a blanket, or even a "snuggie" for that matter. Why didn't they bring Jesus what he really needed?

Do you ever wonder about songs? Why do we allow the words to roll over our lips without really questioning the value of the statement. The same might be said of prayers. Jesus warned the pious elite to be careful with using many words in their prayers - only to look good in front of their audience.

Obviously, it was a great night and our family enjoyed the service very much. But it was just one of those things that made me go, "Uh.... Why do we sing what we sing?"

In 2010 I want to strive to be more intentional in my own authentic thoughts toward God. I want to stear myself away from Christian cliches that are popular, yet tend to gloss over the true meaning of life.

Just something to think about!
