Mark 9:47
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell..
Jesus knew that if we looked at something long enough it had the potential to consume us. Companies know this too. This is why enormous amounts of money are spent to lure us in through visual advertisements. This visual lure has been around for thousands of years. In the case of young man, described in the book of Proverbs, he kept his eyes on a woman far too long who was married, and the result led him to a proverbial snare (Proverbs 7). For King David, when all of the kings were suppose to be at war, David was at home looking at a married woman that he couldn't take his eyes off of (2 Samuel 11). It was an ostrich moment. Our eyes are not limited to sexual seduction. Our eyes can also lust after the things of this world - such as material things. Sometimes we have this hunger inside and we compromise our values by ordering off the world's menu instead of God's food pantry.
Are there areas in your life in which you have experienced an ostrich moment? Do your eyes sometimes override your brain? According to Jesus, the lens of our eyes can let in things that can be potentially harmful to us. Take a moment this week to examine your vision and to align your eyes with those things in which brings glory to Jesus.
