How can a young person keep his or her ways pure? A key verse in the Bible points to the compass.

Psalm 119:9
How can a young man keep his ways pure? By living according to Your Word.

As a human father, parenting can be down right scary, if not, altogether confusing. Neither of my two daughters came with any list of instructions upon arrival. Instead, we simply took them home and prayed that famous parent's prayer, "Oh Lord, help!"

At the heart of every parent is this deep passion to see their kids make the right decisions at each and every intersection of life. And the Bible verse highlighted above presents us with this holy "nudge" that, even though our own words are extremely important in the development of our children, we must also acknowledge that God's Word is the purifying factor in their moral decisions.

As a parent, I've learned that I must be in God's Word to help set the pace for my own children. I must model what it means to have a consistent quiet time or prayer time with my wife, their mother, during the course of the week for them to understand what it means to be "in" His Word daily.

When I get to heaven I do not want to be accused of spiritual malpractice with my children. Instead, my life should model what it takes to keep the compass pointing true north. The rest is up to God.

Don't leave it to the church to train your child/ren up in the faith. Instead, as parents, let's make that commitment together to lead the way. Model what you want them to become. Avoid double-standards. Aim north.
